Our History
In 2001, the Del Río Elorza Family purchased a 40 hectare estate in Colonia Lucinda de Fernández Oro in Alto Valle in the Province of Río Negro, at 39° south latitude in the Argentine Patagonia, where a vineyard had been planted at the beginning of the 20th century. In 2004, they started to recover the almost 100-year-old grapevines that had been abandoned, and planted with a high density (5,500 plants per hectare) 20 hectares of specially selected clones of Malbec, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Aiming to use water in a better and more efficient manner, they set up an automatic drip irrigation system and also a sprinkler irrigation system to actively protect grapevines from frost, which is the only risk factor for production in Patagonia.
Our Location
Amid desert lands, the Negro River plows through the largest valley in the Argentine Patagonia. Settlers channeled the waters coming down from the Andes Mountains for irrigation and created a productive oasis in deep clay loam soils. Regional climate features are ideal for growing grapevines. Cold winters, dry summers with a large temperature gap - light and warm days and very cool nights - enable grapes to ripe slowly and continuously thus reaching harmony between sugar and acidity, with a very good proportion of aromatic substances and excellent colors. Intense and regular winds, together with low annual precipitation and scarce humidity, provide favorable conditions for sustainable and fully healthy winemaking without the use of agrochemicals.
Proffessionals and Technology
Bodega Del Río Elorza is a small winemaking project conceived for producing premium wines with grapes from its own vineyards. The winery focuses on vine growing and practices that make the best use of the varieties best adjusted to the Patagonian terroir. Wines are produced using ahead of time technology in a winery equipped with stainless steel tanks, unpainted concrete pools, French and American oak barrels. To meet these objectives, they added the ability of the renowned winemaker Elias López Montero - a prestigious Spanish winemaker and a group of excellent professionals who accompany the passion for making great wines, among which are the agricultural engineer Marcelo Casazza and the winemaker Lucas Quiroga.
